Caravan insurance checks to carry out before your holiday

Caravan insurance checks to carry out before your holiday

Before you begin to plan your next caravanning holiday, make sure you check your caravan insurance policy before you leave. Checking your caravan insurance documentation before you leave home will save you from the stress and worry if things go wrong and here we give you some tips on what to check to give you peace of mind on your break…

If you are currently in possession of a Touring Caravan Insurance policy, then it is a good idea to carefully study the documents in order to check the level of cover provided by the policy. This will give you the opportunity to discover whether you need to make any changes to the policy before you leave home to start your next caravanning adventure. On the other hand, if your caravan is not currently covered by a specific caravan insurance policy, you’ll need to purchase one before your holiday begins.

When it comes to checking your caravan insurance policy or even taking out a new policy, there are three key things you need to carefully consider before you sign up for the policy.
Do you need your insurance policy to cover you when travelling abroad?
If you are one of the thousands of people who like to travel overseas with their caravan, then you will need to make sure that your caravan insurance policy covers you for travelling outside of the UK.

By default, most caravan specific insurance policies do not automatically cover your caravan for travel outside of the United Kingdom, but instead they will offer this additional protection as an optional extra.

This could very well be the case with your current insurance policy, so if there is no mention of cover for travelling abroad, you will need to make contact with your insurance provider to discuss with them the option of adding non-UK travel cover to your policy.

Another thing to look out for is that some insurance providers will put a limit on the number of days or even the locations where your coverage will be valid. Therefore, it is important that the cover you have for travelling outside of the UK meets your needs before you set off on your holiday.
Make sure your policy covers you in the event of a breakdown
Having the misfortune to suffer a mechanical breakdown whilst traversing an unfamiliar area can be a daunting and unsettling experience, so it is always essential that you check your caravan insurance policy for breakdown coverage.

Coverage for breakdowns is often overlooked by people when they take out their insurance. They may think that they will not need it, or hope to save a few pounds by not adding it to their policy. However, it is advisable to have breakdown cover for travelling in the UK and even more vital if you are travelling abroad, as it is an important safety consideration for you and your family.

On top of the safety aspect, breaking down especially when travelling through a foreign country and not having breakdown cover could prove to be an awfully expensive mistake, as the costs could run into the hundreds or thousands of pounds.

You may find that your car insurance policy covers breakdowns, but some do not, so again it is worth checking and organising any extra cover should you need it prior to setting off on your holiday.
Make sure you have the latest security features
Last but by no means least, you should always take the time to make sure that the security and safety features are up-to-date and in good working order prior to setting off. If you have installed additional security measures to your caravan, then you would have informed your insurance provider about these extra measures in order to reduce your premium. However, if these security features suddenly stop working, then you must also inform your insurance provider as a subsequent claim you make on your policy may be null and void if they discover that you have been less than truthful with them. Being honest with your insurance provider is very important as lying to them can be classed as fraud. Always inform your insurance company of any changes to the safety and security features of your caravan as soon as possible.

As soon as you are satisfied that your caravan insurance policy will effectively cover you for the duration of your holiday, you can drive off safe in the knowledge that if the unexpected does happen that you are sufficiently covered for every eventuality.
